How to get about in Bermuda. Its easy and straightforward, but how do we get started?
Bermuda is easy to get around. There are no hire cars here, by the sounds of it they took the view that there are loads of tourists who come here, if they all hire a car we’re not going to be able to get to work so lets not do that. Sounds a perfectly good plan to me.
The main options are
- Scooter hire – no licence needed – anyone can have one.
- Bus
- Taxi
We took a taxi from the airport, but were keen to ramble around on a bus not needing to know where we were heading. This is easy to do, but also has a bit of a barrier to entry.
To use a bus
- You need to pay the exact fare.
- You cannot pay with any card.
- You cannot pay with notes – coins only.
- You can use a pass.
So having just landed, got to our apartment and worked through the first night of the frogs finest exuberance,Β we have no coins and not knowing where we are getting off, we need a pass – common sense. Lets buy one……but where?Β Passes can be acquired from major tourist centres like an airport (Doh!) or Post Offices. Unfortunately all we have close is a garage (great croissants) and a bar (great beer).
What we now have on our hands is a quest, and as you know, every good nerd appreciates a quest. And I have one, to lay claim to the precious – a pair of 2 day bus passes.
Behold the precious
Like every good quest, it needs an arduous journey. In this case it was a trek (or leisurely stroll) of around 2 miles. I experienced unexpected destinations.
Now, my geography is a bit off but I never thought the Khyber pass was in Bermuda. Unfortunately seeing this sign gave rise to all sorts of strange and repressed thoughts.
You have no idea how much of that film I have secretly remembered all these years, the tiffin, the khazi and the devils in skirts. Still I battled through the terrifying thoughts and on towards the precious.
Finally I reached my destination – and of all places Warwick Post Office!
The precious secured, the stroll back was a wistful one, full of Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Bernard Bresslaw and Roy Castle.
I now posses the precious, but Gandalf said never to use it…..

Happy Birthday Joan !!
