Bangkok Canals

A long tail (James Bond) boat ride around the canals of Bangkok. Complete with Monitor Lizards.

We had no idea Bangkok had such an extensive network of canals, they seem strangely devoid of traffic other than tourist boats like ours. Considering the nightmare which is Bangkok traffic I’d though they’d be used more.

Likely due to flooding. Some of the houses on the canal-side are a miracle of engineering, appearing more like an allotment shed than a home. It was also surprising to see so many Monitor lizards basking on peoples back porches. Some of these guys are big, not sure I’d be happy sharing a coffee with them in the morning.

Scary – I’m about to fall down houses. Lizards basking on the porch.

Not all houses are of the ‘allotment’ type. Some are very robust.

And some are very opulent, and apparently very expensive.

What was amazing was the sheer number of beautifully ornate temples, they are everywhere, nestled between houses, factories and all manner of buildings.

All of them look like they have just landed from a magical kingdom somewhere.
