The Madness of Hanoi Old Town

Not sure I can fully describe what it’s like here in old town Hanoi. Crazy busy, with all forms of transport and human endeavour sharing the same very small space. It starts off intimidating, becomes fascinating, then seems to have a rhythm all of its own.

First night in, we found what turned into our favourite ‘bar’, it opened onto a four way junction which proved to be great TV. Essentially there are no rules, at all. On this junction we have seen everything there could be to see, including a Bentley doing a complete U-turn.

The art of crossing the road starts off a little terrifying, but after a while, once you get into the rhythm of things is surprisingly simple, and not really that stressful. Think of it like fish in the sea, everyone’s moving and no-one collides. It’s a case of  keep going, no ‘surprising movements’ and certainly no running and all will be well.

I’m still amazed the larger vehicles get through, but in our time here we saw no traffic incidents of any sorts.
